(David Reilly with the award Sponsor Citation)

Scottish Care Awards 2016

Our Chief Executive, David Reilly has been recognised as one of the leading home care employees in Scotland, winning the Positive Impact accolade at the recent Scottish Care Awards 2018.

David received his award at a prestigious evening ceremony at the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow, hosted by Michelle McManus and attended by over 300 people. The annual event celebrates the tremendous work undertaken by organisations and staff who work in Scotland’s Care at Home and Housing Support sector.

Having worked in the care sector for 25 years, David has a huge breadth of experience in roles ranging from care assistant to senior management. Colleagues and sector peers describe him as a role model within the care sector, whose impact has been significant, positive and inspiring.

David was delighted to have been recognised and said:

“I am extremely honoured and privileged to have received this prestigious award, and I am very grateful to work with such a wonderful and dedicated team. This award provides extra motivation to further enhance the service we provide to our users, in our continued efforts to be the best at what we do.”

He was nominated by Day Care Manager Bernadette Gaffney, who said:

“David’s passion for the care sector has always been evident. He has steered Baillieston Community Care through challenging times, especially the financial constraints that have been placed on the independent sector as a whole. He believes that good quality care is a basic right and that hard work should be acknowledged and appreciated.”

New Dining Room

New Dining Room

We have created a bright new dining room at Bealach House Day Centre from what was previously our main lounge. It was felt that this space would be better used as a dining room.

As you can see from the pictures above, we have opened up the space by creating a serving hatch from the kitchen, making it easier and safer for staff to serve food to our service users. The room was plastered and redecorated and new lighting installed. We also purchased new dining room tables and chairs along with new blinds and soft furnishings.

The new dining room now accommodates 16 people comfortably and it is our intention to apply to the Care Inspectorate to increase our registration from 12 users per day to 16.

Further news on this to follow!

Baillieston Team Wins Top Award

Scottish Care Awards 2016

Baillieston Community Care in Glasgow has been recognised again for the quality of its range of community based services, winning the Care at Home Provider of the Year award at the 2016 National Scottish Care Awards in June. Current services from Baillieston include a Care at Home Service, a Dementia Short Break Service and a Dementia Day Care Service.

It’s the second time the not-for-profit organisation has won the award, and comes after being found to provide very good care by the Care Inspectorate.

David Reilly, Operations Director at Baillieston Community Care, said: “Our approach to home care is different from the traditional model. We place people at the heart of what we do, promoting independence and choice, involving them as much as possible in how their care is shaped, delivered and maintained.

“This person-centred, holistic approach has increased our ability to identify and reach better outcomes for the people using our service and has given our staff a wider scope of learning and development.

We have established many different ways of involving staff and people using the service in the organisation including a forum, staff focus groups and social evenings.

People have the option of interviewing and selecting their own staff, evaluating their performance as they work with them and being involved in staff inductions and training. Working in partnership has benefited everyone involved.”

Neil Morrison, Care Inspector, said: “I’ve always found visiting Baillieston Community Care to be a positive experience. People tell me the support they receive is really good and staff members are very well thought of. The management team is very knowledgeable about social care and is always looking for new ways to develop the service for the benefit of the people who use it.”

THURSDAY 19TH MARCH 2015
Self Directed Support (SDS) Scotland

The Self Directed Support Bill (SDS), provides you with more choice and control over how you receive your care and support services.

More and more people are looking at taking control of their own support arrangements and more options are now becoming widely available through the implementation of the Self Directed Support Bill 2013.

The SDS Bill defines SDS in terms of the four options that councils will have a duty to offer.

What is Self Directed Support?
Self Directed Support (SDS) allows you to choose how your support is provided, giving you and your family greater flexibility, choice and control over your support.

What about Personalisation, is this the same thing?
Personalisation means that people are actively involved in shaping and selecting services they receive.

Self Directed Support Fact Sheet and Seven Step Guide
If you would like to share information about Self Directed Support with a loved one, simply call us and we can send you out some information.

What are my Self Directed Support options?
There are four main ways that your SDS individual (or personal) budget can be used:

Option1. Direct Payments

  • A payment to allow you to arrange support to meet your agreed support plan outcomes. Baillieston Community Care can for example provide home care with dedicated Home Support Workers.

Option 2. Individual Service Fund

  • Where the council or a chosen provider such as Baillieston Community Care will hold the budget but you are in charge of how it's spent.

Option 3. Local Authority 'arranged' support

  • The council arranges support on your behalf to meet your support plan outcomes. Baillieston Community Care can also provide this more traditional form of service delivery as well.

Option 4. A combination

  • A combination of the above options can also be used if you feel this provides the best solution.

So is Self Directed Support Different from Directs Payments?
Direct Payments have been around since the year 2003 and will continue to be Option 1 of the 4 SDS options. Direct Payments, are payments for the direct purchase of support.

The main change with SDS is that you will know after your assessment, how much your individual budget is and you'll be supported to focus on your desired outcomes, not just your basic needs.

Why would I want Self Directed Support?
SDS can give you more choice and control over the decisions that affect your life. For example, many people need help to get out of bed in the morning, new choices mean you can arrange for someone to come in at the times that suit you and not when the local authority designate.

You will have to remember that services will have peak demand times; services at premium times may have additional charges.

SDS gives people more control over the budget spent on their support. If you would like further information about SDS you can access the Scottish government website on: www.selfdirectedsupportscotland.org.uk

Here are some useful SDS case study videos also provided by Self Directed Support Scotland. You'll be able to see what the Self Directed Support strategy has done for others.

Am I eligible for Self Directed Support?
Everyone is eligible for Self Directed Support and your council has a duty to offer an option to you.

If you are new to receiving social care and support, your council has to offer you Self Directed Support. It will be up to the council to decide when existing customers are transferred to SDS.

The council will support a ‘direct payment option’ if it is satisfied that you will be able to manage it. Your council will be able to tell you more about managing payments and Baillieston Community Care are here locally to help on all of the aspects of Self Directed Support Services.

What can I use Self Directed Support for?
SDS can be used to arrange the services that the council has assessed you as needing.
Your Self Directed Support can be used in a number of ways, including:

  • Receive help at home for personal care and practical help
  • Support in getting out and about in the community
  • Help with going to college, continue employment or getting a job
  • Keeping up hobbies and interests or local classes
  • Volunteering
  • Mobility equipment and home adaptions
  • Respite care

Robert Colligan Skydive for Baillieston

I am doing a skydive to raise money for Baillieston Community Care. This charity has helped my family greatly, providing care as respite for my grandparents. My mother and aunt have continued to be directors for the charity after both my grandfathers passed on. The charity relies on fundraising to survive and really does provide an excellent service to persons suffering from the effects dementia.

The skydive will be completed in June this year in Perth. I am not a fan of heights, however I am looking forward to the challenge and even more so, to raising some money for a charity close to my family's heart.

Baillieston Community Care are working with H1 Learning

Baillieston Community Care are working with H1 Learning

The Challenge
Due to our continued growth within the business, Baillieston Community Care were looking to partner with a local training provider to provide their growing staff with good quality training to ensure a high standard of staff professionalism was met.
Because of H1 Learnings understanding of the staff within Baillieston Community Care, it was decided that the best training programme was via Blended Learning.

The Solution
The H1 Learning blended learning approach for Baillieston Community Care incorporates access to our eLearning courses as well as delivery of face to face courses by a highly experienced nurse trainer.
Account Management was of key importance to the client, ensuring a smooth transition to the H1 Learning blended learning programme.

Providing Baillieston with access to our Education Specialist throughout the year ensured that our face to face courses that were delivered were specific to the staff members within the company and met their practice needs as well as the needs of the service users.

The Outcome
Initially we rolled out access to our large collection of eLearning courses to Baillieston staff, providing guidance on which courses were to be completed as a priority.

Once the majority of staff had completed a high proportion of the online courses, delivery of face to face courses began.  This method allowed for personalised instruction time and the opportunity to reinforce learning achieved through online instruction. The approach proved successful.

At H1 Learning we believe in continuity in educational experiences.  Therefore, each face to face course was delivered by the same facilitator.  This enabled the learners to build a relationship with the facilitator, allowing them to go to her with any further training questions they needed answered.

Because of the success of the blended learning programme, Baillieston Community Care established a year-long training plan with H1 Learning.  We will continue to serve their training needs both in the classroom and online setting.

David Reilly, Operations Manager commented;
‘H1 Learning have been providing us with all our training requirements since July 2013, and we have always found their training to be of a high standard and found them to be very helpful and flexible in their approach. Our staff have responded well to the blended training of e-learning and practical face to face training, and this has improved their knowledge and understanding of clients conditions and support needs.

The flexibly of the e-learning in particular has allowed our staff to have more control over their own training and personal development and we have found an increase in the volume of staff completing these courses in their own time without us having to fully manage their training attendance’

We would have no hesitation in recommending H1 Learning to any other company looking for training providers in relation to blended training options

David Reilly, Operations Manager commented on his staff's achievements by saying: "I think my team is a worthy finalist because they thoroughly deserve the recognition for the sterling work that they do, but more importantly for the excellent service they provide to our service users. The team consistently go above and beyond for our service users and this is reflected in the positive feedback we receive from them. It's great to manage a team where all staff share the same vision and that is to enable people to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Our services are provided 24 hours a day, 365 day per year, and this requires all our staff to work together as part of a team, and I couldn't do it without them. In the current financial climate where we are expected to provide more for less, I am encouraged by the commitment and dedication shown by all my staff and I am proud to work alongside them every day. Well done to all my team!"

Carol Hayes

Baillieston Community Care has a visit from ‘The Secret Millionaire’

Carol Hayes is a millionaire London agent representing celebrities such as Gok Wan and Arlene Phillips - leaving school at 16 with only one O-level Carol has built her fortune by being a tough business woman and following her instincts. She is on a mission to find charities she feels passionate about and won’t settle for anything less…

Carol has had to be equally tough at home, she bought up her two children as a single parent whilst running her own business and gets her workaholic attitude from her parents, who never expected any help from anyone.

Carol goes to East Glasgow's desolate Easter House Estate, one of the most deprived areas in the UK where life expectancy in some places is just 54.

Struggling to find any kind of life on the estate let alone a charity that she can engage with, Carol is excited to finally come across Bealach House Day Care Centre, a charity helping people with early stage dementia. As her own mother suffered with dementia Carol becomes passionate about helping a charity so close to her heart.

She also finds the hub of the community and base for several other local charities the Connie Community centre and learns the importance of a local area pulling together.

Carol is a big kid at heart and volunteers at Peek (Possibilities for East End Kids) which provides a safe play for kids on the streets of Glasgow, stomping ground for over 170 gangs.

Once Carol finds charities she really cares about she throws herself into volunteering and the people she meets help her get in touch with her softer side.
